FROM THE PRINCIPAL

by Miss Beth Hill

Dear Friend of Newark Catholic High School,

How many times have we heard someone say “simple pleasures are the best” and then wondered how someone could find joy in such a trivial matter?  We have also seen the signs reading “Practice Random Acts  of Kindness” and perhaps thought, how did I help someone today or what did I do to make things easier for another person?  People come in and out of our lives for a purpose.  Do we think about that when they leave?  During the past year we have lost some very close friends in our community.  On October we suffered another loss of a true friend, Steve Hoar.  Steve, like many of you, volunteered countless hours to make our community a better place.  He didn’t ask for anything in return, he just wanted to make things better.  In his practice of simple acts of kindness, he truly touched our lives and made the world a better place.  God bless Steve and all of our friends who are now gone but forever a part of our memory.

Fall marks a time of tradition and thanksgiving for us.  We celebrated our annual Homecoming with many spirited activities.  We also have raised funds for our local United Way agency and have plans to continue to fund raise for other community projects.  During the course of the year, our students and staff will raise over $4,500 for charity and volunteer over 10,000 hours of service.  These are just what we have recorded; there are probably many more dollars and hours spent by our students and staff in service to our community.  We are thankful for the opportunity to give back to a community which has so richly blessed us.

As we draw near the holidays, we remember our good fortunes and of course, our families.  Recent alumni continue to visit during their breaks to share their stories of success and sometimes, woe.  The Dominican Sisters still keep in touch  as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.  We were even blessed with a visit from our former principal, Sister Paulette Boll, on October 8 as she and Mrs. Margaret Matesich Gruenke spoke to our students about the Missions, especially their work in El Salvador.  How truly enriched our lives have been by the Sisters and all of the teachers who have taught in service to our Lord at Newark Catholic.  Please keep us in your prayers, as you will remain in ours.

May our Lady continue to bless us.

Sincerely,

Beth Hill

CAMPUS MINISTRY

By Miss Susie Gribble

The year started with Freshman Orientation.  Msgr. Enke celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with parents and students.  His message was one of welcome and encouragement. The seniors led the activities.

The next NC school Mass will be held in the gymnasium on All Saints Day, November 1. The Mass schedule for the year can be found on the Newark Catholic web page (see web site below).  Please know that families are always welcome to attend the school Masses.  The retreat schedule will also be posted to the web page by the end of the month.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR COMMUNITY LITURGY

By Mr. Rick LaBrake

Freshmen students at NC have the formidable task of setting up the gym for Mass on days that the celebrations are scheduled at the school.  Rolling out tarps, moving the altar, setting up chairs for the upperclassmen, and gathering the books, utensils, bread and wine, and hymnals for liturgy takes the full class period of two mods.  As 30 students scurry about checking the details and making ready for the celebration, their teacher enjoys this time with his students, working together physically to serve God by serving our community.  This is a year long process of skill developing, only to pass on the capable freshmen to the sophomore class and prepare to start training another corps in the autumn.

After liturgy, that which was gathered must be returned.  Sacristans will be trained to “wash the dishes” from the Lord’s Supper and to put things away.  Chairs will be returned to the cafeteria, the tarps will be rolled back up by another group of boys.  Our freshmen will continue their day knowing that they’ve done another good job whether anyone inside or outside the school even realizes.  That’s what service in the Lord’s name is about – remaining humble of heart and walking with God, and not seeking attention for the service.

Our theology course is Morality.  The arena in which we live our gift of morality is everyday humanity, and having enough positive self esteem to let others go first as we serve them...the way Jesus does.

FOOTBALL

By Coach Bill Franks

The 2002 NC football team enters the last week of the regular season with lots of momentum.  The team has played very well down the stretch with big wins over Steubenville Catholic Central and Columbus Hartley.  At press time, it looks as though the Green Wave is ready to make yet another run at the state playoffs.  The fans have been outstanding this year.  Thanks for your support.  Let’s Go Green!

VOLLEYBALL

By Coach Jeri Ann Helfer

The Lady Wave volleyball team finished the regular season with a record of 13-9 overall which earned them a 2nd  seed in district tournaments. They  defeated Cardington in the opening round of tournament play 15-5, 15-5. They went on to win the sectional crown with a win over Millersport 15-3, 15-3.  They will  play Fisher Catholic in the district semifinals on October 24.   The Lady Wave are currently on target to reach Academic All-Ohio with a team GPA above 3.5.

CROSS COUNTRY

By Coach Rennie Bare

The Girls cross country team had a successful season, finishing in the top 3 a total of seven times. Strengths this year were their ability to run as a team pack, and team unity.  The individual ladies all improved throughout the season.

The Boys cross country team got off to a slow start due to inexperience.   But through hard work they improved steadily throughout the season.  The season was capped with a 4th place

GOLF

By Coach Joe Giles

The NC golf team record was 48-80.  Highlights of the season were that two players made it to the district finals: Elliot Calloway and Joe Schopp.  Both were named honorable mention all-district.  Joe Schopp set a new 18 hole school record with a 1 under par 70 at the Northridge Invitational. The Green Wave linksters look forward to joining the Mid-State League next season.

SENIORS

Tanna Tucker

Fall of our senior year is a pivotal time in our lives.  It is during this time that we prepare to close one chapter in our lives and move on to the next: college.  ACT and SAT tests and college visits are what is on everyone’s mind right now.  We have all been working very hard in sports, activities, and in our classes; and we are off to a successful start.  We have various college representatives visiting Newark Catholic.  Senior year can also be stressful – which college to choose, scholarships to apply for, and realizing that this will virtually be our last year with friends.  Senior year is a nostalgic one and we should enjoy it, for June will be here before we know it.

JUNIORS

Jayme Thissen

Finally we are upperclassmen.  As the school year started, we have experienced some changes.  Some of our friends are now at LCJVS or are taking classes at OSU-N and COTC.  We are learning the names of the freshmen and they are becoming our new friends.  Our lives are busy with athletics, clubs, after school activities, studying and friends.  Many of us took the PSAT on October 15.  We made plans for homecoming and had a great time at the dance. We are looking forward to the fun and exciting year ahead of us.

SOPHOMORES

Jillian Walsh

This year’s sophomore class is looking forward to another year of new and exciting times.  We are no longer the youngest in the school and enjoy not being freshmen.  But with that comes new responsibilities and roles of sophomores.  We have to be good models for the new freshmen and help them.  We can no longer use the excuse “I didn’t know” because we know what is expected of us and what we need to do.  But so far, this year has been great and we are all anticipating the opportunities that lie ahead.

FRESHMEN

Daniel Wigginton

The start of the freshman year has been pretty much as it was expected to be: a bit overwhelming for the first few days, but really just a period of new learning and of getting used to the schedules and homework.  In theology, we have dis-cussed morals and the issues of honesty and power.  In history, we are learning about WWI and creating projects pertaining to certain aspects of this war, such as trench warfare.  In biology, we’re learning about population growth and its factors.  Someone once said, “You have a very long journey ahead of you.  Right now would be a great time to start, you know.”  So far, this philosophy has been followed closely by the freshmen.
