Dear Friend of Newark Catholic High School,
Wonderful memories were shared by many
alumni and friends during the weekend of September 19 when the 1968
Football Team was recognized as State Champions. The stories told were
reminiscent of the days of glory during the journey of their undefeated
season. Coaches, players, cheerleaders, and fans joined the celebration
of the champions. And true to their championship form, they acknowledged
the contribution of the dedicated teachers and staff who encouraged and
disciplined them along the way. The team truly exemplified the attributes
of victors. Our 2003 football team wears t-shirts with “Uphold the
Tradition” but the shirt of the evening belonged to the 1968 team who wore
“The Tradition Began Here” on the back of their shirts. It was very
symbolic of the legacy of champions our school proudly holds. Our best to
the team of 1968 and to all those who wore and continue to wear green
close to their hearts.
Our thanks to all of you who continue to
support Newark Catholic. We are blessed with wonderful faculty, staff,
students, families, and friends. Please keep us in your prayers, as you
will remain in ours. May Our Lady continue to bless us.
Sincerely,
Beth Hill

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
By Miss Laurie Davis
A big thank you goes out to the DeVito
family for granting the Newark Catholic High School Library a monetary
gift in memory of their father, John DeVito. Out of this fund, a shelving
unit was purchased to display a variety of materials highlighting
holidays, special events, and new books.
GOLF
By Coach Joe Giles
The NC golf team finished third in
the Mid-State League with a record of 18-6. Some of the highlights for
the season included a new 18 hole school record set by Aaron Wood with a
66 at the Northridge Invitational. NC will miss its three seniors in
Patrick Gordon, Cody Markle and Max Miles.
VOLLEYBALL
By Coach Jeri Helfer
The Lady Wave volleyball team finished the
regular season 21-1 with a 14-0 record in the Mid State League. They ended
the regular season by defeating Division I Newark High School. They won
the sectional tournament defeating Johnstown and will play Highland in the
district semifinals. The team is the number one seed in the Division III
central district. They won the Toledo Golden Spike Tournament beating
three Division I schools to win the title.
CROSS COUNTRY
By Coach Rennie Bare
The Girls cross country team finished
1st in the MSL by running as a strong pack, and winning on the strength of
a sixth place tie-breaker. The following week that success carried over
to the district meet where they finished district runner-up, which
qualified the girls for the regionals on October 25. The Boys team
finished third in the league. This year’s team featured many
underclassmen. The boys finished 8th at the district meet led by Devin
Reid’s 10th place finish. This qualified Devin for the regional meet on
October 25 at Lancaster.
FOOTBALL
By Coach Bill Franks
The 2003 NC football season has been an
exciting one. At press time, we are 8-1 and 7-0 in Mid State League
play. On October 25, we close the regular season out against 7-2
Millersport. A victory will bring us an outright league title. The
playoff picture is bright. We have already scored a home playoff game with
21 talented seniors. We are excited for the opportunity to uphold our
strong tradition.
CHEERLEADING
By Advisor Cynde Travis
As the football season comes to an end, the
NC cheerleaders would like to thank all of the NC faithful fans. We hope
you enjoyed the season as much as we did. A special thanks to the

CENTRAL OHIO YOUTH FORUM
A select group of Newark Catholic students
attended the Central Ohio Youth Forum in Columbus recently. Under the
guidance and leadership of Ms. Peggy Rouch and Mr. Wes Poth, the students
spent the day at the Forum discussing a world issue among other students.
The Central Ohio Youth Forum is a daylong
event in which students get together to come up with solutions to world
problems. The topic this time was “Israel and Palestine: How Hard to Push
the Roadmap to Peace.” The student-run forum was geared towards
discussing the problem and coming up with a practical solution.
First, the “keynote speaker” introduced the
topic to the group of about 50 students and gave everyone some background
information. Then people separated into their assigned groups to discuss
their standpoint on the issue. Each group had to come up with some kind
of consensus to present to the whole group. After each of the group’s
options were presented, each student chose which standpoint they agreed
with and joined that group. Next, the groups each had to come up with a
more detailed plan of their standpoint, later presenting it to the entire
group. After each group presented their plan, each student voted for
which option they liked the best. The group who won the most votes in
addition to the original group number was the winner. The program is very
constructive in that students can build leadership, character, and
knowledge through this student-run forum. Students are able to share
their knowledge about world issues and come up with viable solutions.
Newark Catholic plans to attend more of the forums throughout the school
year.
STUDENT VIEWS
SENIORS
It’s life in the fast lane for the senior
class of 2004. On top of school work, sports, and extra-curricular
activities, we are also busy making decisions about college. In order to
be admitted to college, seniors are taking ACT and SAT tests, visiting
colleges of interest, and filling out numerous college and scholarship
applications. While it may be hard work, the class of 2004 finds ways to
unwind with fun activities like cheering on fellow classmates at sports
events, attending Homecoming, and hanging out with friends. We may only
have one more short, yet fun year with our peers, but we will make the
most of our time together until graduation in June.
JUNIORS
We are finally upperclassmen, and with that
comes more responsibility. We began the year with prom fundraisers such
as car washes and a rummage sale. As part of the Homecoming celebration,
each class competed for the best hallway decoration, and we can proudly
say that the junior class took the top honor. In the classroom, we have
been busy reading The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible along
with working on our history presentations. We are beginning to prepare
for our future by taking the PSAT and looking into prospective colleges.
We are looking forward to another great year.
SOPHOMORES
I’m sure many of us were told before the
start of sophomore year that it would be the hardest of our high school
years, but none of us were quite ready for what was in store. With our
first year of school behind us, we feel much more confident about what to
expect from our classes and life as a high school student in general. But
with this new sense of security also comes responsibility, such as setting
a good example for the incoming freshmen. The old excuses don’t work
anymore, we know how things are run now and it’s up to us to make sure we
do it right. Homework, coupled with time spent at various practices,
keeps us all very busy, but our sacrifices have been worth it. Many of
our fellow students are playing varsity golf and cross country, and our JV
records are 22-0 in volleyball and 6-2 in football. Cheerleaders keep the
spirit up at the football games, and the student body provides excitement
during the volleyball matches. With our sophomore retreat and a great
Homecoming Week behind us, we are all ready to settle down into a great
year of fun and learning.
FRESHMEN
Freshman year has started out just as we
expected it would. New friends, new teachers, new schoolmates have been
helping us start the school year off right. Ever since our first class
discussions to our first tests and projects to decorating the hall for
Homecoming, we have been joined into an unbreakable chain of determined
workers. From learning about the Civil War in history to mythology in
English, we’ve already started learning many new and valuable things. We
hope that we can use what we learn here to become the kind of young men
and women who will make our parents proud.
