FROM THE PRINCIPAL by Miss Beth Hill Dear Friend of Newark Catholic, The spring has blessed us with warm weather, insightful school projects, exciting ball games and track events, and of course, an abundance of volunteer parents and friends. As I write this letter to you, several of our cherished volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the beautiful Auction decorations in our school gymnasium. And come Sunday morning after this huge event, more parent volunteers will give countless time and energy to our Bingo program. Although this may seem strange to bring to your attention, volunteering is the lifeblood of our financial stability for our school. Volunteers do make the difference and we thank all of you for your hard work today and all of you who worked for our community in the past. The 2001-2002 school year has been one of sorrow and triumph. We mourned the events of September 11, the passing of our good friends, Mr. Paul Dowling and Mr. Bill Bartley, and we welcomed the year 2002 with a deep sense of faith and hope. Lessons learned by our students and faculty during this past year were more than lessons from a textbook; they were lessons in life and all it has to offer us. I am still amazed at the sense of compassion and caring shown by our community during the difficulties we experienced during the fall of 2001. But now, as we welcome spring, we focus on the smiles and the laughter of our students. They are ready for exams and a summer of fun and relaxation. Before the days of summer arrive, we will work to create fond memories during the final weeks of our school year. St. Joseph the Worker Day of community volunteering is being planned by our Theology Department, as well as our May Crowning ceremony. Prom (still closed to NC juniors and seniors only) will be celebrated with the continuing tradition of dance cards being completed. The Senior Mass of Farewell is being planned to acknowledge and thank our seniors and to wish them well on their journey. And of course, our seniors are looking forward to their graduation in June with Mr. Jeff Uhlenhake as our speaker. It is an exciting, and sometimes exhausting, time of year for us. As we make the turn toward the end of this school year, we are thankful for all you continue to do for our community. May Our Lady continue to bless us as we pray for one another and for our world. Sincerely, Beth Hill
SCHOOL NEWS CAMPUS MINISTRY by Mr. Al Hoffman There are changes in the wind in the Campus Ministry Department. My wife and I were blessed with a baby boy, Sean, in January. After considerable prayer and reflection, my wife and I have decided to switch roles for the next few years. Although the idea of being home to take a more active role in raising my son is exciting, I will greatly miss all the friends I have made in Newark. I would like to thank all of you for the love and support you have shown me the past three years and I want you to know that I will always have a special place for the people of Newark Catholic in my heart and in my prayers. The good news is that we are welcoming our friend Susie Gribble back into the department. Susie, Rick LaBrake, and Laura Ritchey will continue to take a collaborative approach toward Campus Ministry and are very excited about next year. St. Joseph the Worker Day was held on May 3rd, with students helping out at such places as Mt. Calvary Cemetery, T.J. Evans Park, Goodwill Industries, Heath Nursing Home, Blessed Sacrament, St. Edward’s, St. Francis and St. Leonard’s, to name just a few. Their work ranged from cleaning homes and washing windows to mulching gardens and moving hay. One group was even serenaded by a nursing home resident as they cleaned his room! The end of a beautiful day came with the annual Crowning of our Blessed Mother. Thanks to all who helped to make the day a special one for our school community. AUCTION UPDATE The exotically decorated NCHS gymnasium was the setting for “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” on Saturday evening, April 27th. The annual Touch of Class Dinner Auction was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Countless parent and student volunteers worked to see that all the guests had a special evening of fellowship, fun, and good food. A special thanks to the many alumni, area businesses, parents and of course, guests, whose support made possible our efforts to ensure our students receive the best possible education. We are sincerely grateful for your continued and enthusiastic support. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 26, 2003 for our next Touch of Class Dinner Auction. KUDOS FOR STUDENTS! Seniors Melissa Dickman and Libby Ewing auditioned for and were chosen to join the company of the All-Ohio Theatre Troupe. This elite group of 35 high school students from all over the state rehearsed and prepared for the play “Museum” by Tina Howe. Melissa designed 38 costumes for the 17 actors over a period of just three months. Libby performed as three separate characters in the play for three performances on April 12th for an audience of over 2,000 at Hilliard Davidson High School.
Junior Jenny Lennon will be spending five weeks at the University of Notre Dame this summer. First Jenny, and senior Candice Salyer, and junior Alex Wilson will participate in “ND Vision,” a 5 day retreat studying vocations. Next, Jenny will attend the Life Teen Youth Leadership Camp. Finally, Lennon has been selected to be part of a three week “Summer Experience” Theology course of study. She was chosen as one of only twenty in the country to be awarded this honor. It is Jenny’s hope to some day attend Notre Dame as a college student, receive her Ph.D. in Theology, and later teach there. Sophomore Carlos Marroquin won a trip to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City last February. He was one of 400 McDonald’s employees selected from 1.3 million crew members worldwide. Carlos attended Olympic events, participated in McDonald’s activities for the Olympic crew, and served the Olympians in the Olympic village. Sophomore Kyle Willis received first place honors in the Land of Legend solo competition last November. He also place third in the Welsh Hills Symphony Orchestra competition in February. He has received superior ratings in all of his trombone solos for the past 5 years. Kyle received a partial scholarship for an 8 week program to Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan in June. NC THEATER ARTS by Mr. Todd Baldosser On April 4th, 5th and 6th, Newark Catholic High School presented the classic musical, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” The cast included Sally (junior Kendra Phillips), Lucy (senior Jenny Lee), Charlie Brown (freshman Ryan Wahl), Linus (junior Eric Riesbeck), Schroeder (sophomore Paul McPeek), and Snoopy (sophomore Kyle Willis). The Charles Schulz characters performed to sold out audiences at the OSU-N Black Box Theater. Congratulations on a job well done! The football squad has been increased to 10 per squad, which should keep the NC faithful on their toes. We appreciate the continued support of the Newark Catholic community. A special congratulations to Mallory Arnold and Megan Norris, varsity captains for 2002-2003. We look forward to an exciting football and basketball season. GO GREEN WAVE! SCHOOL NEWS VETERANS’ GRADUATION On February 1, 2002, at Newark Catholic High School, four World War II veterans were presented with their high school diplomas by Bishop James A. Griffin. Family, friends, and the entire student body were on hand for the honors in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week. Congratulations, gentlemen! A NOTE OF THANKS The Dowling Family would like to thank you for all the prayers, support, and acts of kindness through our time of tragedy and healing. Everything was very much appreciated. We are very blessed to be part of such a loving community. Thank you. The Dowlings – Marty, Sean, Patrick, Misty, Kathleen, Mathew, and Joseph SENIORS - Joel Monroe Our senior sojourn here at Newark Catholic is coming to a close. We have come together to “stick it out” with pride and excellence. Recently, we have concluded our arduous senior English papers, conquered a plethora of in-class novels, and have returned from an excellent senior class trip to Chicago and spring break. Now we are down to the final stretch. Saint Joseph the Worker Day and Prom were a huge success; we just have final exams to complete. For most seniors this has been a time of much stress and tough decision making. The choices to pick the right college, keep up the grades, fulfill leadership roles in the classroom, in athletics, and in the community are very difficult. This time can also be emotional for some, especially when we know we might be giving our final farewells to most of our senior classmates and faculty. Nonetheless, over the years we have gotten to know each other and the faculty at Newark Catholic intimately, and we will always remember and hold a special place in our hearts for them and all the memories we have shared. JUNIORS -Kate Rusek The second semester has been a very busy time for the junior class. After returning from Christmas break, it was time to take our exams. Only three more sets left! We went on our junior class retreat at Camp Falling Rock and are finishing our experiences with in-service. The spring sports teams have been working very hard and the Drama production was, as al - ways, a huge success. We planned St. Joseph the Worker Day with Mrs. Ritchey., and after many finishing touches and turning in our junior English papers for Mr. Schaefer, we are now preparing for the ACTs and SATs and to assume our role as the seniors of 2003. SOPHOMORES Tony Cannizzaro As the 2001-2002 school year comes closer to its end, the sophomore class has remained very busy. We’ve been participating in spring sports and enjoying the warm weather. It’s nice to now have the windows open during the school day. We finished our big newspaper project for Theology, which brings a nice feeling of assurance. Many of us now have earned our driver’s license, which also brings a feeling of relief. We continue to look forward to the summer and becoming upper classmen next year. FRESHMEN Jacinda Tolliver Looking back at the past years, plenty of students in the freshman class have looked for- ward to being high school students and role models for others. As a class, we have taken many big steps to grow together, expand our faith, and prepare for the future. To give us a feeling for high school and to get to know one another, we had our freshman retreat at Camp Falling Rock. Another activity that took place was Career Fair, which helped us identify our personal qualities and look toward the occupations that would fit each one of us. Moral values and principles are very important things that will help us along the way, also something that is practiced daily at Newark Catholic. Our freshman year of high school has been an enjoyable experience and we are looking forward to the years ahead of us. REUNIONS
