ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER DAY
On May 2nd, Newark Catholic High School celebrated St. Joseph the Worker Day by serving the local community. Whether they were raking leaves, weeding, mowing, mulching, washing windows, or planting flowers, NC students were busy at work. For all their efforts, thanks go to the entire student body, faculty, staff and parents, and to Mrs. Ritchey’s Christian Justice class, and especially: Kate Stickle, Jake Kagey, Troy Nichols, Chris Heitker, Megan Michelson, Breann Ragor, Melissa Peters, Sarah Matesich, Dusty Layton, Tony Cannizzaro, Colleen Varga, Erin Gummer, and Jenny Richardson. Also special thanks go to those who helped with our May Crowning, especially Ali McCandlish for singing “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” and to Laura Jalbrzikowski and Brittani Pickering for making the Blessed Mother’s beautiful crown.
Dear Friend of Newark Catholic,
Once again the passage of the winter season into spring has led to many activities for our students and school community. The annual St. Joseph the Worker Day was a successful event for us for the fifth consecutive year. Many thanks to Ms. Laura Ritchey, our sophomore and junior Theology teacher, and to her Christian Justice Class for coordinating and conducting this wonderful day of service. The day concluded with our annual May Crowning in honor of Mary and in memory of all the Dominican Sisters who served at our school. Prom was once again a major success. Mr. Todd Baldosser, junior class advisor, and the Class of 2004 planned a beautifully decorated dance with many exciting and entertaining moments. Our thanks also go to the countless volunteers and patrons of our annual Touch of Class Auction which generated funds for our operating needs.
The school year has passed very quickly but I would like to take a moment to thank our students, teachers, staff, parents, and all who contribute to the success of our community. With graduation fast approaching, we will miss the leadership of our seniors and we send them off with our best wishes. We are blessed with dedicated and hard working people who continue to support our mission as a Catholic school which offers students an environment for growing in their faith, expanding their knowledge, and extending their talents in service to others. May Our Lady continue to bless us.
Sincerely,
Miss Beth Hill, Principal
SCHOOL NEWS
On May 15, 16, and 17, NC Theater Arts presented “The Fantasticks” to an enthusiastic crowd. Job well done!
SPANISH MASS
On December 12, 2002, the Newark Catholic student body attended the annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass. The Mass was said in Spanish and was celebrated by Fr. Dave Orians. Students from Mrs. Cathy Schumaker’s Spanish IV and Spanish V classes planned and organized the special liturgy and also did the readings and petitions. The NC Spanish Club was responsible for the beautiful decorations shown above.
AUCTION UPDATE
“A Night on the Nile” was the theme of this year’s annual Touch of Class Dinner Auction which was held on Saturday, April 26th. Countless parent and student volunteers worked to see that all the guests had a special evening of fellowship, fun, and good food.
A special thanks to the many alumni, area businesses, parents and of course, guests, whose support made possible our efforts to raise the funds to ensure our students receive the best possible education. We are sincerely grateful for your continued and enthusiastic support. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, April 24, 2004 for our next Touch of Class Dinner Auction.

VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT
Headed up by freshman history teacher Mr. Chris Parkinson, and in conjunction with the Veterans Memorial Association, (chaired by local veteran Mr. Ed McDonald), NC students have been interviewing veterans of our community in order to preserve history. The interviews are being taped and the information is cataloged so that permanent records of our local heroes will be on hand in our local library. Members of the club are: Kristi Blasczyk, Kate Carpenter, Gretchen Dellner, Lauren Farias, Greg King, Sarah Lehman, Meredith McDonald, Mason Michelson, Jared Morrison, Greg Oberfield, Andi Stollard, Sadie Warthen and Kyle Yeager.
PARENT TO PARENT By Wes Poth, Freshman Guidance Counselor
Thanks to all the parents how took part in this year’s Parent to Parent workshops. I believe that everyone who attended came away with useful information that can help them and their children as they travel through those “wild and crazy” teen years. A special thanks to Chrisanne Webster, Monica Stell and Ric McPherson who were our first set of facilitators. They did a great job! Next school year we will be planning at least two more Parent to Parent workshops. I strongly urge you to consider attending. If you have any questions about this program please contact me at the high school at 344-3595 ext. 223.

From Athletic Director Bill Franks As I write this article our spring sports seasons are in full swing. Optimism runs high among our teams with over 150 student athletes participating on our track, baseball, and softball teams. Our coaches are continuing to place high standards on our student athletes both on the athletic fields and in the classroom. The future looks very bright. Go Green! Congratulations to former NC football coach JD Graham who was inducted into the Ohio High School Hall of Fame on 4/25/03!
SOFTBALL Coach John Stare
At press time, the varsity was riding a 5-game winning streak. They are now 14-6. The Lady Wave will be in sectional tournament at Home vs. Millersport on May 10th and will play the winner between Danville and World Harvest on May 12th.
The Lady Reserve is now 12-2 on the season and the freshmen are 8-3. The NC Softball program is proud to report that they are having a successful year!
BOYS TRACK Coach Jim Marquis
At the LCL Honor Roll Meet on May 7th, the boys track team won the 3200 relay with a time of 8:17.5 with runners Stephen McDonald, Ben Dennison, Devin Reid and Alex Echeverry. Also winning the 1600 relay in 3:32.7 were McDonald, Dennison, Echeverry and Adam Blaney. Nick Wilson and Kyle Klein also placed in the meet. This will give them all great motivation for the districts.
GIRLS TRACK Coach Dave Blaine
The girls track team is once again on its way to success. There are many new freshmen as well as two girls returning with state competition experience. The team has continually placed high in many invitational meets. In running events, Jenny Richardson perpetually places in the 800 and 400, and the 4x800 team is 2nd in the county. In field, Kate Stickle and Jessie Tanner often make a spectacular showing, while the new freshmen high and long jumpers are anxiously waiting to step up. On May 17th the team will be competing at the district meet, then regionals and on to state on June 7th at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.
BASEBALL Coach Scott Burkholder
The Green Wave baseball team is having another great season at 19-5. The defending state champs have won 12 out of their last 14 games, including a 13-0 win over Heath, last year’s division III state champs. The team batting average is .374, and averages 10 runs a game against their opponent’s 3 runs. They are counting on their loyal fans to show their support during the tourney run. The NC baseball team is very confident and playing fierce competition in the last week of the season and is ready to defend its state title in post season play.
CHEERLEADING – The 2003-2004 Cheerleading season is underway. We have increased the number of cheerleaders on each squad. Our goal is to motivate our NC fans even more! Thanks for your past support. We look forward to a FANtastick season next year.
MILITARY WALL OF HONOR AT NC
In the main lobby showcase at Newark Catholic, you will find a tribute to our NC alumni and parents who are currently in the armed forces around the globe. They are:
IN MEMORIAM Our sympathy is extended to the families of the following alumni, parents, and friends who have recently died:
SENIORS In retrospect, the senior year for the class of 2003 has gone incredibly fast! Already we have gone on our Washington, D.C. trip, St. Joseph the Worker Day and to our final prom. Thus it seems that the whole of our senior year has been completed.
Now however, we must learn to bid farewell to the core of our high school career. We will soon be handed our diplomas and will be leaving NC’s doors forever. Therefore we will no longer see our faculty or fellow classmates. Hopefully, friendships will be kept and lessons learned will not be forgotten. Good luck to the class of 2004! Rachel Stout
JUNIORS The junior class is well on its way to becoming seniors. However as juniors we still have jobs to do and have been very busy. The prom decorations turned out to be a big hit and everyone enjoyed the big dance. We had a great time but there was still work to do. The juniors planned the service project, St. Joseph the Worker Day in Mrs. Ritchey’s class. Of course, we can’t forget Mr. Schaefer’s English paper, or the Math/Physics trip to Cedar Point. Our winter sports teams did well and we are currently cheering on track, baseball and softball. Well, we have just a few more tests and projects and then look out! Stephen McDonald
SOPHOMORES
Despite it being the end of the year, it seems that our class has more work to do than ever. We have all been working on our newspaper projects for Theology class and have been doing presentations on Julius Caesar in English. More and more of us are receiving our driver’s license every week. Many students are involved in spring sports or activities such as the play. We all are anxious for the warmer weather and freedom of summer and to be-come upper classmen in the fall. Nate Harris
FRESHMEN
Although the end of the year is approaching quickly, the freshman class is still hard at work. In March, we attended the Career Fair at Denison University. This helped us each complete research papers on a profession which we may choose to pursue later in life. In History, we watched the news and read newspapers to stay informed about our troops in Iraq. By sharing what we have learned daily, we have taken the “hands-on” approach to learning. We enjoyed our freshman retreat and helped others on St. Joseph the Worker Day. We continue to work and grow in all subject areas and also as individuals. In all, our fresh-man year has been a success and we look forward to the years to come at Newark Catholic. Emily Finlaw
