Dear Friend of Newark Catholic High School,
As we come to the end of a very successful school year, I would like to once again thank everyone who supports our school community in their prayers and services. The members of the Class of 2004, like so many before them, will truly be wonderful additions to the “real world” they are about to enter. They have shown pride, dignity and compassion in all they have done this year as leaders in our building. We wish them only the best on their journey.
This time of the year can be very sentimental for many of us with the graduation of those near and dear to our hearts. To our parents of this class and all those before it, we give our thanks to you for sharing your children with us and entrusting them in our care. The faculty and staff members at Newark Catholic High School are proud and committed to the mission of educating our youth and most proud of the accomplishments of our students both present and past. Enjoy your summer with family and friends.
A Summer Prayer Go now and know that the Spirit of Jesus will be watching over you. Go now and enjoy God’s summer gifts of warm sun, cooling waters, and long light days. Go now with the gift of faith, that you might see God’s hand in all your work and play. Go now with the gift of hope, that you may know God’s guidance, which is keeping you safe. Go now with the gift of love, that you might offer kindness and care to all you meet. Go now with the gift of knowledge, remembering all that you have learned. With God’s help, try to live it. Go now with these words of Jesus in your hearts and minds: “I will not leave you; I am with you always.” Amen.
Please keep us in your prayers, as you will remain in ours. May Our Lady continue to bless us. Sincerely,
Miss Beth Hill, Principal
NEWARK CATHOLIC STUDENTS WORK IN THE COMMUNITY
The 10th annual St. Joseph the Worker Day began on Friday, April 30th with over 300 NC students and faculty lending a helping hand to local organizations and residents. Tasks ranged from raking, weeding and planting, to performing household chores and moving heavy logs and picnic tables! It was a day to give back to the community. All were treated to lunch back at school, followed by a beautiful May Crowning ceremony.
AUCTION PARADISE
“A Night in Tropical Paradise” was the theme of this year’s Touch of Class Auction, held on April 17, 2004. Many volunteers worked to see that the 262 guests enjoyed a special evening of fun, food and bidding. A 2001 Pontiac Grand Am went to the highest bidder for $6,450. The successful gala raised over $55,000 for the school’s operating budget. The sale of early bird tickets and the beautiful items up for bid were just many of the reasons this auction was such a success. A special thanks to the many parents, businesses, alumni and of course, guests who made it all possible. April 30, 2005 will be the date for next year’s event.
SUMMER FESTIVAL
Be sure to mark your calendar for our NC Alumni-sponsored Summer Festival, which will be held on Saturday, August 7th from 4:00 to midnight on the Newark Catholic parking lot. It should be a great time with the added attraction of an extra tent on the lot for the reunions of the Class of ’59 and the Class of ’64. So don’t miss the fun!
HALL OF FAME
The Newark Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame Induction was held on March 6, 2004 at OSU-N Adena Hall. The inductees are: Beth Hill, Matt Midea, Lori Kane, John Brown and Dina Guanciale. Those honored with the Award of Merit are the late Dr. Gerald Erhard, Jim Kennedy, Jack McManus and Jim Paul. Congratulations to all!
NC LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE By Miss Susie Gribble
To help the officers in student council, the senior and junior class officers, and those officers in National Honor Society, students will participate in a seminar to be held at MedBen on June 7 from 10-4 pm. Topics to be discussed will include Christian leadership, ways to conduct a meeting, and how to set a school calendar. The seminar will be conducted by Miss Hill and Miss Gribble
KEY CLUB By Mrs. Angela Hughes
Eight members of Key Club, along with KC advisor Mrs. Angela Hughes, librarian Miss Laurie Davis, and Mr. Matt Hughes, spent spring break in Charleston, SC working for Habitat for Humanity. Mindy Amornyard, Adrienne Atkinson, Erin Bentz, Christina Breitmayer, Nancy Nguyen, Breann Ragor, Kristen Riley and Allison Tomich joined forty other students from around the country to take part in Habitat’s “Collegiate Challenge”. For one week the students, along with some professional volunteers and future homeowners, helped to build five houses. While the homes were in various stages of being built, most students helped to roof and drywall. It was an incredible experience that will remain with the students for years to come. Our thanks go out again to those who helped to fund this worthwhile project!
LATIN MASS By Mr. Bob Smith
On May 6, 2004, the Latin students at Newark Catholic celebrated Mass in Latin with Father Tim Hayes of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. The students were fully immersed in the language during the celebration as all prayers, responses, readings and even the homily were in Latin. For any NC Latin alumni who would like to have a similar experience, Blessed Sacrament will be celebrating its 100th anniversary the weekend of June 12-13, 2004 during the Feast of Corpus Christi. Masses will be held in Latin at 6:00pm on Saturday and 8:00am and 10:30am on Sunday at Blessed Sacrament.
FRESHMAN ENGLISH By Mrs. Angela Ashbery
In reading The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the freshman class has been investigating the theme of bullying. Through a class project, the students researched the effects of bullying and harassment on adolescents. Collaborating with other members of the class in preparing PowerPoint presentations, videos, newscasts, interviews and other presentation options, the freshmen are learning that bullying is real and people’s lives are affected each day. Bullying is an increasing and underrated problem in schools today. Awareness and knowledge are two tools that will help combat the situation. For more information, a link to bullying resources has been set up on our school webpage, which can be found at www.newarkcatholic.org.

Last but not least, our softball team has had another winning season and has qualified for the districts. Let’s Go Green!
HONORS BIOLOGY By Mrs. Amy Vohsing
While studying biomes earlier this year, the Honor’s Biology Class was in contact with a field researcher in Northern Alaska! The students sent him questions via the internet. The researcher works for the Marine Biological Laboratory in Wood’s Hole, Mass. He was stationed at Toolik Lake field station in Northern Alaska for three years. The experience was one the students won’t forget!
THREE-DIMENSIONAL FAITH By Miss Marion McRae
The 3D Art Class created pedestal or wall crosses using Styrofoam as an armature. They cut the Styrofoam and hot glued the pieces together. Then they covered the form with gauze full of plaster to seal it. After that layer set, the students mixed plaster and added further form or texture. When the students finished with the cross form, they painted their work. This project began during Lent in harmony with the film, “The Passion of Christ”.
ADVANCED BIOLOGY EXPEDITION TO OSU LAB By Mrs. Amy Vohsing
A trip to Franz Theodore Stone Lab was a special treat for the Advanced Biology students. Stone Lab is Ohio State’s Biological Field Station in Lake Erie. It boasts being the oldest functioning freshwater field station in the nation! The students spent the morning doing limnology (freshwater) studies off of Rattlesnake Island (similar to what the EPA does when testing water). The afternoon was spent fish seining, studying fish anatomy, collecting and learning to identify and correlate invertebrates with the quality of water sampled, and ornithology (birds).
STUDENT VIEWS
SENIORS
While many are sad that the year is coming to an end, we are all ready to graduate. The year has gone by so fast, but has been so successful. As of now, the spring sports of track, baseball and softball are on their way to triumphant seasons. On top of that, many of us had a great time at prom and are looking forward to graduation parties and summer vacations. But we are still busy finishing last minute things from choosing colleges, to planning for graduation, to still working hard on school work. Many of us still need to stay focused, for the AP tests are our last hurdle. Our last big event was St. Joseph the Worker Day and now our year is almost complete. Even though there are only a couple of weeks before our class of 2004 steps out of Newark Catholic, we all hope to have left a lasting impression. And we hope for success for the class of 2005.
JUNIORS
The school year is rapidly approaching its end and each day we are closer to becoming seniors. Before we can move on to our senior year we have work that needs to be completed. We were happy to finally turn in our research papers in English, and complete our history presentations. In our Christian Justice class we made preparations for and worked on St. Joseph the Worker Day. We also spent many hours planning and setting up this year’s prom which was a great success. The end of this year will lead us into our last and final year of high school, in which we will be the leaders for others to follow.
SOPHOMORES
As this year flies by we are getting closer and closer to the next step of our high school career at Newark Catholic. This semester we as sophomores have worked hard to achieve academic and athletic success. Most of us are in track, baseball, softball or drama. We stressed over, spent many hours on, and recently turned in our huge newspaper project for theology. Then there was the Julius Caesar project in which we taught the class. Yes, we thought it was about time that we got to teach the class and the teacher had to listen to us lecture. This year has gone by like a jet going mach-5. We are relieved that the hard work of this year is almost over but we still have to face Mr. Schaefer’s long essays, Mrs. Ritchey’s planning of the St. Joseph the Worker Day, and the Head Start program that will come next year. It has been a memorable year and we still have the spring concert to participate in that will blow the roof off the school!
FRESHMEN
Looking back, freshman year is coming to an end, and has gone by incredibly fast. We’ve had many projects to keep us busy, including everything from PowerPoint presentations in history, to reading Romeo and Juliet and writing career papers in English, and having our debates in theology. Many of us are keeping busy with baseball, softball, and track, or preparing for football. Unfortunately, since the year is coming to an end, we have exams coming up. I’m sure we’ll manage them and roll right through sophomore year.
