2009-10 Boys Basketball Highlight Video Available
The Newark Catholic Boys Basketball program made history in 2009-2010. In addition to the first ever State Runner-up finish, NC was tagged the Associated Press D-IV Poll Champions, earned the first Regional Championship for boys basketball, recorded back-to-back District Titles, and took a share of the MSL-Ohio crown. Along the way, this group logged a school record 21 straight home victories spanning more than two seasons and set school records for single season wins (25), regular season record (19-1), and overall record (25-2). This 60 min. video created by Storied Rivals tells the story in its truest form. Here is a chance to not only relive the memorable games of the 2009-10 regular season and tournament run, but also you will see interviews from the seniors that anchored the team, candid locker room footage, and some of the lighter moments off the court. For more information on how to get your copy of the video email Coach Meister at ameister@laca.org.

In the second quarter, Kevin connected on a 44-yard touchdown pass to Heath’s Charles Gresham. Then with under 2 minutes to go, Cox connected with Ross Comisford for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to one. A pass on a fake extra-point fell incomplete, allowing Muskingum Valley to escape with a 21-20 victory at Newark’s White Field.
Kevin was named Licking County’s MVP for his performance.
Newark Catholic’s Phil Taylor also played in this All Star game. Clay Harris, Josh Hendershot, and Nate Adams were also invited to play but declined due to their scholarship commitments.
Congratulations Kevin and Phil on representing Newark Catholic well!

Clay Harris named Advocate’s 2010 Field Athlete of the Year
Congratulations to Newark Catholic’s Clay Harris on being named the 2010 Field Athlete of the Year by the Newark Advocate. Harris recently won 2nd place in the State Finals shot put and 3rd place in the State Finals discus competition.
“I want people to remember that I never gave up, whether I was winning or losing by a bunch,” said Harris, who qualified for the state meet in all eight of his opportunities. “I was still giving my best and really trying to better myself.”
Harris threw a personal-best 56-feet-3 in the shot put to place second for his first medal in the event, and his throw of 178-3 — the second-best of his career — earned him third in the discus. Those accomplishments and his season-long domination of the throws locally made him The Advocate’s 2010 Male Field Athlete of the Year. He also won the honor in 2009.
Later this month, Harris will be back to work, participating in an intensive three-day camp at Ashland University, where he signed to throw collegiately in November. Later this summer, he will be back on campus ready to tackle his next challenge as he attempts to further his development under the tutelage of Jud Logan, who was a four-time U.S. Olympian.
Congratulations, Clay!

NC Baseball finishes 2nd in Ohio Division IV
NC Green Wave Baseball put forth another strong effort today against the Fort Loramie Redskins, in a game that was delayed nearly 3 hours by rain and threatening weather.
Redskins pitcher Justin Hoying allowed just a first-inning single to Xavier Cook and five total baserunners as Fort Loramie posted a 3-0 victory Saturday at Huntington Park in Columbus to deny NC its seventh state title.
“Both teams have been playing extremely well defensively, and I was just hoping that we could
outscore them by one,” NC coach John Cannizzaro said.
Michael Lewis pitched four-plus innings before switching positions with Jimmy Lough in the fifth. Lewis and Lough combined for seven strikeouts.
NC sophomore Garrett Vernau made diving catches in right field in the third and fourth innings to help keep the game close. His catch in the fourth stranded two runners.
Congratulations to our Green Wave on exceptional performances throughout the post season!
Harris earns 2nd and 3rd in State Track Events!
Newark Catholic senior (recent graduate, actually) Clay Harris made another very strong showing at the 2010 State Track & Field championships, held at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Friday.
Harris threw a personal best 56-3 in the Shot Put to win his flight and earn 2nd place (State Champion runner-up).
Harris was the defending State Champion in Discus, winning the 2009 event with a throw of 166-07. At this year’s championship event, he blew by that mark and threw 178-03 !! Unfortunately, two competitors broke the previous state meet record and threw more than 190, with the winner throwing 193-03. So Clay finished a strong 3rd place, easily out-distancing the remaining competitors.
Congratulations, Clay, on your 2nd and 3rd place State finishes!
