The First News Package

March 31, 2012

Welcome back from Spring Break!

Don’t forget that you all have a News Package due this coming week. Here are the individual due dates:

Joe & Brenden: Tuesday

Tanner & Mitch: Tuesday

Bridget & Hailey: Wednesday

Sam & Katie B: Wednesday

James, Xavier & Roan: Thursday

Morgan & Katie W: Thursday

Here is the presentation I showed you (twice!) in class. You’ll have to use your computer’s “down” arrow key to advance the slides, and the video does not play. But please use it, and the rubric I gave you the first day it was introduced, as much as you need to get a great grade on this project.

Timely Article on Product Marketing

October 17, 2011

I just came across this article on twitter. Timely, no? It’s about how Dr. Pepper has packaged their new product, “10,” to appeal to men. It’s a quick read, and interesting.

The Shot Tells the Story

September 20, 2011

As we learned today, all video projects, whether they’re 30-second commercials or feature-length films, are planned in a variety of ways. Of course there is a script – but how does a director plan his or her visuals? With a storyboard! Here is the web site we used in class today. It’s a very thorough insight into how a production is planned visually. It’s the next step in learning how to direct your audience’s attention, and communicate with them non-verbally. I’ve also included a storyboard blank for you to use as you need – and you will need soon!

Sometimes, Words Just Aren’t Necessary

September 8, 2011

Non-verbal communication. We’ve all heard of it, and we all use it. How well we use it depends on how well we are aware of it. Movie & TV directors rely on it in a million different ways, to get you to think or feel a certain way without using words. We’re just starting our study of The Psychology of Presentation with a look at some different shots that directors use to help convey their message. For example, if tension is rising between two actors, watch how the director uses shots to help sell that: he might start with a medium-wide shot that has both actors in it, then move to individual medium shots as each one is talking, then to close-ups as the tensions build.

Here is the presentation I used in class to illustrate the point.

And, as it says in the title – Sometimes, Words Just Aren’t Necessary.

Study Guide for Quiz, Sept. 7, 2011

September 6, 2011

Here are the PowerPoints that I used in class. For this quiz, definitions don’t need to be exact; I’ll be looking for your understanding rather than your memorization skills. Don’t sweat this one – if you’ve paid attention in class you’ll be fine. Oh, and you might want to be able to name the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Feel free to email me if you have additional questions, or see me before class.
