NC Fall Update
The 2012-13 school year is off and running! It’s been a fast and furious fall at Newark Catholic so far. Homecoming Week was filled with fun and school spirit. The students dressed up as twins, super heroes and donned their favorite spirit wear. Father Wilson helped us all remember our roots during Homecoming Mass and the football team beat Heath in front of the Homecoming royalty of Kevin Bourne, King and Courtney McCracken, Queen.
All School Retreat
During Catholic Schools Week, the NC students had their annual retreats. This year was a little different because the NC Campus was shut down due to construction. The freshmen held their retreat at St. Francis de Sales, the sophomores went to The Church of the Blessed Sacrament while the juniors and seniors held their retreats at Sts. Peter & Paul Retreat Center. “MVP” (Morals, Values & Principals) was the freshmen theme.” Unity through the Church” was the theme for the sophomores. The junior retreat theme was” My Moral Mission” and the seniors took the” Emmaus Walk”. All of the retreats were centered around the four Cardinal Virtues; Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice.
After a loss in the season opener, the football team has picked up steam in running off six straight wins! The latest victory was 25-9 over arch rival Licking Valley at White Field. The Green Wave then took care of Whitehall with a 41-6 win setting up an MSL-OHIO showdown with Granville. The Green Wave sit atop of Region 23 and the MSL-Ohio with just two games to play.
In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Coach Helfer, the volleyball team finished the regular season 21-1.The Lady Wave garnered the number one seed in the Central District. The Ladies captured the always tough Golden Spike tournament and clinched the MSL-Ohio title.
Cross Country is very young this year but are rounding into top form at the right time. The girls recently captured the Cambridge Invitational while the boys took second as well as both teams finishing 4thin the MSL.
The Girl’s Golf Team set some new team record scores this year and won more matches than ever before. The girls will only be losing one senior to graduation, so the future of girls’ golf at NC looks good.
The Boy’s Golf Team was looking to make a return to the State Tournament this year but were edged out in a playoff for the final spot for the State. The Green Wave golfers did beat Granville twice this year ending a thirty-three year drought against the Blue Aces as they finished with an 86-20 record.
The new Academic Wing is well under way and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2012! The new classrooms should be ready for students and teachers for the start of Second Semester in January. It hasn’t always been convenient for our teachers and students, but everyone is getting excited about the new edition!
