On January 28, 2012 Nate Ohl received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. The appointment states, “On behalf of the President of the United States of America, the Admissions Committee of the United States Military Academy takes great pleasure in announcing an APPOINTMENT to Nathanael Paul Ohl, Class of 2016,” Deborah J. McDonald, Colonel U.S. Army, Director of Admissions.

Nate’s journey to apply and be accepted to West Point began in March of 2011 during spring break, when he visited the academy and spent half of a day with a fourth class cadet (a freshman). He had to complete a rigorous application process that began in May and included being academically qualified, physically qualified and medically qualified. He was also interviewed by a former U.S. Army Officer who is a graduate of West Point. In September he received a Letter of Assurance to West Point, which stated that he would be accepted if he received a Congressional Nomination. After interviewing with committees representing Congressman Patrick Tiberi, Senator Robert Portman, and Senator Sherrod Brown, he received a nomination to West Point from both Congressman Tiberi and Senator Portman.

West Point is a top tier academic institution on the same level as Ivy League universities as well as the premier leadership institution in the world. All cadets must go through rigorous military training as well as extremely rigorous academics. The acceptance rate is approximately 10%. Following graduation, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army and must serve five years on active duty. Notable graduates of West Point include in part; Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas McArthur, George Patton, many astronauts, including Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Norman Schwartzkopf, David Patreaus, John G. Hayes (former president of Coca-Cola), and Michael Krzyzewski (Duke University basketball coach).

Nate stated the following, “I am honored to have been selected to attend one of our nation’s finest institutions. I am excited to experience the many challenges and opportunities which West Point has to offer.”

Congratulations, Nate!

December 3, 2011

NC Golf Coach Joe Giles

Newark Catholic Golf Coach Joe Giles (NC 1974) has announced his retirement after serving as NC’s Varsity Golf Coach for 30 years.

During his tenure as head coach, NC’s golf teams have enjoyed much success, including getting to the State Finals on 3 different occasions.  This year’s team placed 5th in the state, following the 3rd place finish in 1998 and the 4th place finish in the 2001 State Tournament.  His teams have also won two league titles.

Coach Giles is a PGA Professional who has been recognized with numerous awards, including being named a 2010 and 2011 Golf Digest Top 10 Instructor in Ohio and a PGA Southern Ohio Teacher of the Year.  The success and development of this year’s team has benefited greatly over the years from the many lessons from Coach Giles.

Giles leaves the team in strong shape, including returning 3 of the 5 members of this year’s state finals team and other up and coming returning players.

Today Giles can be found at Granville Golfland where he continues to give lessons and develop players of all ages and skill levels.

Thank you, Coach Giles, for 30 great years of service!

NC Boys Golf Finish 5th in State

October 16, 2011

Stephen Stein, Coach Dick Schmitz, Nick Mercer, Will Nodo, Coach Thom McManus, David Meurer, Head Coach Joe Giles, Sean Thomas

Congratulations to the Newark Catholic Boys Golf Team for finishing 5th in the State (Division III) this year, concluding with the state tournament held October 14 & 15 at the OSU Scarlet course in Columbus.

The tournament was played in very challenging weather conditions, with high winds and cold temperatures making the Scarlet course a real test.  NC’s team started strong and near the top both days, but couldn’t sustain the strong play long enough to come out on top.  They still grinded it out and and finished in 5th place out of the 12-team field competing at the championship.

Kudos to all the Newark Catholic supporters who showed their support and school spirit, attending the tournament to support the team in less than ideal conditions.  A great testament to the NC family.

This has been a year of many accomplishments for the NC Boys Golf team, including:

  • 5th Place in the State
  • Sectional Champions (first time for NC)
  • Lowest team score ever for NC on its Moundbuilders home course (153)
  • Lowest team score ever for NC (+2), tying the low round of 146 set back in 2009
  • First place championship at the Circleville Invitational
  • Tied best-ever finish in MSL (2nd), matching the finish in 2010
  • Overall record of 88 – 26

Congratulations to the NC Boys Golf Team!  Well done!

Building Our Future Campaign

Successful Campaign So Far — Still Need Your Help

The Building Our Future Capital Campaign has been successful to this point. To date, we have raised $1.8 million of our $2.2 million goal for this campaign. During the process, we have been able to add a few extra necessities to the package without adding any extra costs to this project. However, we still need to raise $400,000 to make this project complete.

If you haven’t made your contribution to this much needed project, please contact Advancement Director Thom McManus at 740.344.3594 ext. 248 or via email: tmcmanus@nullcdeducation.org.

Every bit helps and every contribution to this campaign places your name on the “Donor Wall of Fame” at Newark Catholic High School forever! Get together with your family members to assemble a gift that will recognize your family as NC supporters and ensure the future success of Newark Catholic High School.

The renovation process has begun!

The Diocese of Columbus has granted permission to begin the renovation process.  Work has begun this summer and is expected to be completed by next summer, in time for the start of the 2012 school year.
