NC Boys Golf Team Advances to the State Tournament

October 4, 2011

Congratulations to the Newark Catholic Boys Golf Team as they successfully advanced out of the District playoffs on Tuesday and are headed to the State Tournament!

This marks the first time in the past ten years that the NC golf team has made it to the State Tournament and the 3rd time during Coach Giles’ 30-year tenure as coach.

The NC team played in the early group and posted a competitive team score, finishing strong after a slow start.  They  then had to sit and wait for a couple hours as the later scores were slowly posted one by one.  As the very last score was posted, it was clear that NC would be advancing to the State Tournament.

Today’s round was led by Nick Mercer with 77, followed by David Muerer (79), Sean Thomas (81), Stephen Stein (85) and Will Nodo (87).

The State Tournament is next week Friday and Saturday (Oct 14 & 15) at the OSU Scarlet Course.

Come over to OSU Scarlet and support your NC Golf Team as they compete for a State Championship!  Go Green!

Newark Catholic holds Historic Groundbreaking Ceremony

August 30, 2011

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 was the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Building Our Future Capital Campaign.

Cia McQuiade, Diocesan Superintendent; Beth Hill, Newark Catholic Principal; Bishop Frederick Campbell; Fr. Bob Penhallurick, St. Francis de Sales; Fr. Jonathan Wilson, Blessed Sacrament; and Msgr. Paul Enke, St. Edward the Confessor. (click to enlarge)

It was a beautiful day. Bishop Frederick Campbell blessed the grounds as well as the NC student body. Campaign Chair Mike Massaro told the gathering how proud he is to be a 1966 graduate of Newark Catholic and how proud he is of the Newark community for helping make this campaign a success during some of the most difficult economic times in our country’s history.

Asbestos has been removed from the convent area. Several trees have been cut down to make room for expansion. Demolition of the convent will be in the next couple weeks.

The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2012.

Thank you to everyone that has made this project possible!

New “Classroom Connections” Allows You to Stay Connected

August 24, 2011

We are introducing a new feature on the Newark Catholic website this year called Classroom Connections.  This allows Teachers to communicate all sorts of information to students and their families using a simple blog format. So far we have 5 teachers using this new feature:  Mr. Nelson, Ms. Perone, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Vohsing, and Mrs. Welch.

You can get to the Classroom Connections home page by using the “Quick Links” on the NC Home page, or by using the Classroom Connections menu item in the Academics menu at the top of each page.

Classroom Connections shows you the Most Recent Posts at the top so that you can easily tell if any new items have been added.  You can click on the post title to view that given post.  You can also scroll down and see a summary for each of the teachers and their classes.

Click on a given class to go view the blog for that class.

Once you’re in the blog section, you’ll see a navigation sidebar on the right that lets you choose to view the blogs of any of the given classes (or teachers).

Click the Classroom Connections logo on top of that right-hand sidebar to return to the Classroom Connections home page.

Use “Classroom Connections” to stay connected and up to date with your Teacher!

Thank You for Successful 5K Run in Memory of Kayla and Devin

July 31, 2011

Thank You to all the participants, supporters, and organizers who helped make our 5K run in memory of Kayla Layton and Devin Reid a success.  About 200 runners and walkers participated in the event that was held on Saturday, July 30.

The run was organized by members of the Newark Catholic class of 2006, classmates of Kayla and Devin.  Kayla died in February this year from injuries sustained in a car crash.  Devin died in January 2009 from complications resulting from cancer.

Kayla and Devin participated in track and cross country while at Newark Catholic and the 5K run was a fitting way for friends to remember them.

The event raised about $2,000 for the Newark Catholic Foundation.

A related story can be found in the Newark Advocate here.
