Green Wave Baseball wins 9th baseball state title!
The 2016 Green Wave baseball team won a ninth state title overall, a seventh since 2002 and a second straight over Triad at Huntington Park in June.
Newark Catholic caught a man in a rundown for the final out, in the wind and the rain, to claim its third in four years.
The Green Wave broke a state record for stolen bases – regardless of division – with 11 and reached nine times by either walk or being hit by a pitch and persevered for a 5-4 win over North Lewisburg Triad for the Division IV title.
It was an emotional post-game ceremony as recent graduate Christine Joyce and sophomore sister Victoria shook the players’ hands as the received their medals.
The team dedicated the season to their mother Joyce, who died in April from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The student body and baseball team in particular wore bright green t-shirts with the phrase “ Strike out ALS.’’
