Theater & Arts

Looking at art is one way of listening to God.
- Sister Wendy Beckett

The quote above by Sister Wendy Beckett beautifully describes what happens in the Visual Arts classes at Newark Catholic. In addition to looking at art, students create, respond, study artists, and reflect on their own artistic creations as a way to hear God’s voice in their lives.

At Newark Catholic, we offer many courses that allow students to create in ways that best suit their gifts and learning styles. Classes include Art Fundamentals, Ceramics I & II, Painting I & II, Sculpture, Drawing, and Independent Study for students pursuing a deeper interest or career in the Visual Arts.

The Newark Catholic music/theater department also strives to reach students with many interests and talents. Participants receive a well-rounded education through classes such as Music Appreciation, Percussion, Vocal Music Ensemble, and American Musical Production. Students are encouraged to use their God-given talents by taking part in the annual winter musical, the Spring Cabaret & Art Show, liturgical choir, and backstage or tech crew opportunities. Many also lend their artistic skills to set design, costuming, and production needs—bringing together visual and performing arts in dynamic and creative ways.

Each May, the Festival of the Arts brings these talents together in a celebration of creativity. The art gallery features student work from throughout the school year, while the Cabaret Performance showcases music, drama, and song. Together, the exhibit and performance highlight the breadth of student talent and the many ways Newark Catholic students reflect God’s goodness through the arts.
